I’ve been busy with work and holiday-making, but I wanted to squeeze in a few more Illustration Friday pieces before the year winds to a close. First up, this week’s topic is “Explore,” a favorite theme of mine. Since I play with map and travel ideas a lot, I wanted to explore new subject matter — the natural world — during the past year. This is a compilation of a few of my journal studies.
These are my old favorites — ink, watercolor, and pencil on Canson Montval paper, by the way. But I set off to explore new media for last week’s IF topic, “Stretch,” which I…uh…was still working on this week. I went with Alice in Wonderland s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g to new heights, starting out with a brief sketch:
and then trying to turn that into a (semi)finished piece using my new Prismacolor Premier Brush Tip Markers and Canson Illustration paper.
The paper’s a wonderful surface for markers, and the markers themselves are rich, surprisingly blendable, and a lot of fun. I layered the marker here with Prismacolor Verithin pencil, just to see the effect, and they, too, worked well with the Canson paper. New art supplies are so much fun!
